How to Tell If Your Pipes Are Frozen

1. No Water

The most obvious red flag is that water stops coming out of your fixtures. This could mean that all the water in the lines is frozen solid. If you see a trickle or noticeably slower stream of water from your taps, the pipes may be only half frozen. In either case, contact a plumber before the issue worsens.

2. Bulges

As water freezes, it exerts pressure along the interior walls of a pipe, pushing it outward. Pipe materials are generally strong and are designed to last for decades. Visible bulges mean that the system's integrity has been severely compromised. These protrusions may also be covered in frozen condensation or frost, indicating freezing cold water inside the pipes. Insulating your plumbing can usually prevent this problem from occurring.

3. Gurgling or Banging

You should rarely hear water moving through your pipes at a plainly audible level. If you detect gurgling or banging, your pipes could be trying—and struggling—to route ice chunks through the system. 

Try to get warmth to the area, such as by turning up the heat or opening up the door to the room or cabinet that your frozen pipes are in to see if this resolves the problem. If not, you might have a water hammer or too-high water pressure.
