Both stucco and plaster contain cement and sand and offer strong, durable, and long-lasting finishes. However, there are many subtle distinctions between these two types of building materials that make them suitable for different applications. Use the following guide to learn about each product and determine which is the appropriate choice for your project.

Stucco

The primary ingredients in stucco are cement and sand, as well as a lime-based binder. Additives, like acrylic or fiberglass strands, are sometimes included in the mixture to enhance its strength and prevent the formation of cracks and chips. This hearty composition makes the material suited for exterior building finishes, as it ensures a strong bond with siding, stone, particleboard, and other surfaces.

In most cases, stucco is applied in three layers. The first coat is called a scratch coat and is applied over a wire lath. The second is called a brown coat, which is smoother than the scratch coat and provides a flat surface for the application of the final layer, or top coat. This outermost surface has a rough texture that's created with a trowel.

Plaster

Plaster also contains cement and sand, but instead of a lime-based product, it uses gypsum as the binding material. Plaster is most commonly used for interior finishes, though it can be used on exterior surfaces, as well. It can be applied to walls and ceilings and added to molds to create design features, like columns, railings, and banisters.

This building material has a bit more versatility. Since it is a softer substance, special tools and sponges can be used to create more intricate designs and patterns in the surface. If it's used on the exterior of a property, it can be applied in the same three-layer method; it can also be installed by machine. When you hire a plastering contractor, they can always plaster over a stucco surface, or vice versa, to meet your design goals.
