When installing decorative concrete to enhance the look of your walkway or patio, you shouldn't pour it during or immediately after receiving rain. The moisture can damage freshly poured concrete in ways that are difficult to remove without replacing the structure. Below is a brief guide about how rain interferes with curing concrete and some steps to prevent issues.

What Does Rain Do to Fresh Concrete?

To cure concrete, manufacturers leave small particles of aggregates in the mixture so that they reinforce the finished structure. When you expose the surface to rain, the water softens the concrete and washes away some aggregate. This causes it to lose strength and abrasion resistance, as well as makes the concrete more vulnerable to cracking and dusting. Dusting occurs when the top layer starts to disintegrate, creating a layer of powder. The result makes decorative concrete less dependable, attractive, and safe.

What Are Some Ways to Prevent Issues?

Fortunately, rainfall during or after pouring will not automatically ruin your decorative concrete surface. However, you should avoid as much damage as possible. First, check the weather forecast for the day you're planning to pour. If there is a chance of rain, hold off until another day.

Occasionally, rain showers will pop up out of nowhere. Prepare for this situation by keeping a tarp or plastic sheet nearby. If rain starts to fall during the pouring or within four hours of mixing, cover the surface and place heavy bricks or rocks along the edges to form a tight seal.

If rain falls after the four-hour mark, the surface may be firm enough to withstand damage. Don't try to work the rain into the wet concrete or add dry cement to soak up the water, as this can oversaturate the mixture. Let the water sit until the storm passes, then sweep it off the surface with a float.
