Before floor coverings are installed, surfaces are smoothed and flattened through self-leveling floor underlayment. Some concrete contractors find this method more convenient than traditional concrete, especially when installing tiles over in-floor heating systems. Below are some tips to keep in mind when working with self-leveling underlayment.

Tips for Using Self-Leveling Concrete Underlayment

1. Prepare the Floor

Whether you’re a layman or a seasoned concrete contractor, you’ll need to follow these steps before spreading the mixture on the floor.

  • Clean the Floor: Remove dirt and contaminants using a vacuum to ensure that your primer covers the floor and not the dust on top of it.

  • Seal Openings: Use caulk to seal off cracks in the wood. For walls, install sill sealers to keep the liquid underlayment from flowing into other rooms. For large holes like vents and drains, install and then caulk cardboards to the floor. Meanwhile, use wood strips as barriers on doorways. Be sure to caulk these to the floor as well.

  • Prime the Wood: This process will keep the wood from soaking up water. Allow the primer to sit until it dries.

  • Install the Lathe: To strengthen the underlayment, add the lathe and staple it every two inches on the seam and four inches in the field. Make sure it is as flat as possible to keep it lower than your mixture.

2. Buy Extra Leveler

Keep bags of leveler dry by stocking them on a piece of wood or elevated surface instead of putting them on the ground. Most concrete contractors know the correct ratio of mixing concrete to avoid going over budget.

3. Spread with Care

Make sure the mixture is lump-free before using it to ensure a smooth, even surface. Also, keep the bucket low as you pour to minimize splashing, which may alter the mixture's consistency and result in variances across the floor.
