If you recently scheduled your first full-body massage, you have probably heard all of the benefits a massage can provide. Helping with back or neck pain, relaxation, and even some simple, quiet time can go a long way for your mental and physical health. Being prepared for your first massage is easier than you may think.

4 FAQs on Getting Your First Massage

Do I need to do anything before my appointment to prepare?

First, drink plenty of water the day before. Your therapist will be working many different muscles during your full-body massage that are not usually worked. This is a good thing but can leave you a bit dehydrated or sore if you do not drink plenty of water before and after the massage.

Should I arrive early to my first appointment?

Be sure to arrive 15 minutes early. Arriving early is a good idea for a few reasons. First, it allows you time to fill out their paperwork before your session. The paperwork gives the massage therapist an idea of where your problem areas are, and if there are areas you want them to avoid during the session for any reason such as injury or preference. Second, it gives you time to unwind. The spa will most likely have a relaxing waiting room with water available for you to drink while you are waiting for your appointment to begin.

Do I have to undress completely?

Full Body MassageYou should only undress to your level of comfort. The reason it is recommended to undress completely is that it allows the massage therapist to work all of your muscles the most effectively. The ultimate goal is for you to be relaxed and comfortable. You will be in the room alone while you undress. Once undressed, you will lay on the massage table face down and pull the drape on top of you. The massage therapist will only remove the covers as they work each section of your body during the full-body massage. During the session, your genitals or breasts will not be exposed.

Should I talk during the session?

That is up to you. Your massage therapist will respond to your needs. If you prefer quiet relaxation, that will be respected. If you strike up a conversation, that is fine too. What is most important is you and your leisure. Do not be afraid to say if you would like your massage therapist to focus on an area for a more extended period. Also, if you find out that you do not, for example, like your feet being massaged, let them know as well. Communication with your massage therapist is vital to get the most out of your first visit.

After your first full-body massage, your massage therapist will be able to give you a recommendation on how often they think you should return and what type of massage may benefit you the most. This is only a recommendation. At Kama’aina Massage and Foot Spa, you won’t be able to resist coming back.
