You may have seen a U.S. flag closely resembling the American flag but with a "76" design in its field. This version was the Bennington flag, a lesser-known variation of the American flag. It has a debatable history but originated around the same time as the American Revolution. Use this guide to learn more about the banner.

The Origin of the Bennington Flag

Historical legend claims that the original Bennington flag was retrieved by Nathan Filmore from the Battle of Bennington—a minor but influential battle in the American Revolutionary War that took place in New York. Rumor states that it was passed down through his family for several generations.

Eventually, the woven work was donated to the Bennington Museum. Experts there have dated the flag back to the 1800s, making it unlikely that it was used in the historic battle since it took place in 1777. Although historians are unsure whether this U.S. flag was truly present at the Battle of Bennington, it is still considered valuable memorabilia from the event.

The Meaning Behind the Bennington Design

The Bennington Flag is designed similarly to most American standards, with red and white stripes and a blue field. The 13 stripes represent the 13 American colonies that rebelled against Great Britain. In the blue field, its stars have seven points instead of the standard five. And they are positioned with one in each upper corner of the field, and the other 11 in a partial circle.  The "76" is surrounded by the 11 stars to represent the year 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
