Going on a snorkeling adventure gives you an up-close view of amazing coral reefs and other stunning marine life. However, you also have some responsibilities in exchange for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Utilizing the following tips leaves the beautiful seascape just as you found it. This not only allows others to enjoy the same experience, but native sea life can also continue to thrive in their underwater environment.

Do:

Wear reef-safe sunscreen.

While sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin and decreasing the risk of developing cancer, you must be choosy about the brand you wear when snorkeling. Products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate can do irreparable harm to underwater environments, as they diminish the reefs' ability to withstand sun bleaching. The problem is so significant that Hawaii passed legislation banning oxybenzone and octinoxate, which officially went into effect in 2021. There are plenty of reef-safe brands out there, so be sure to read the label closely when choosing sunscreen.

Be proactive about trash removal.

In addition to not leaving any trash or litter behind in the ocean, you should also help out by removing any you see during your snorkeling excursion. Plastic waste is particularly hazardous to all types of marine life, and the amount found in the ocean only seems to be growing. Do your part by bringing a mesh bag and snatching up any floating trash you find. When you're back on land, dispose of it safely to reduce the garbage's impact on the gorgeous natural environment.

Don't:

Chase marine life.

While it's exciting to see sea turtles, fish, octopuses, and other underwater animals, you must keep your cool. Needlessly chasing marine life causes the animals stress and worry, which can result in them attacking you or your group. Observe them from a distance to ensure your safety while also allowing them to roam their natural habitat without interference.

Touch or stand on coral reefs.

Touching a reef can result in a painful sting or skin irritation, but it can also damage these surprisingly delicate creatures. It's possible for the oils in your fingers to break down the reef's natural defenses, which leaves them more vulnerable to disease and illness. Standing on a reef can also cause parts of it to break off, which may negatively impact the entire system.
