Hawaii is home to some of the world's most beautiful corals. These multi-layered, living ecosystems provide food and habitats for various sea creatures and plants. A snorkeling excursion provides an exciting opportunity to see these marine creatures up close. If you're planning an underwater adventure, here are several common types you might see.

What Kinds of Coral Can You Find in Hawaii?

1. Cauliflower Coral

The colonies have heads that grow 10 to 20 inches in diameter, with branches that mimic the formation of cauliflower and rose blossoms. The coral, which produces shades of pink and brown, also has blunt, forked ends and projections called verrucae. As one of the most common types seen in Hawaii, this type of marine creature thrives in areas with more wave activity.

2. Finger Coral

This type gets its name from its distinctive appearance, as it resembles fingers. The coral grows up and out and is found in shallow waters such as bays and reef slopes. On your snorkeling trip, be on the lookout for their appendages with flat tips in colors ranging from light brown to yellow to gray.

3. Mushroom Coral

If you're snorkeling around reef flats, you might find this coral nestled between the crevices. This species has a disk shape resembling a mushroom cap, with its elliptical features growing to seven inches in diameter. Younger forms attach to an adult through a stalk until they break off when they reach a certain size. If you notice an arch in the middle, it may indicate you've found an adult species. Mushroom coal pigments vary based on their exposure to sunlight. They are often dark brown in deep waters and shady spots and pale brown in direct sunlit areas.

4. Lobe Coral

Alpheid shrimp play a significant role in lobe coral formation. The crustacean produces long cracks on the marine creature's head. Lobes also have snowflake-type protrusions that move about on the water's surface. The colonies form large, encrusted areas on reefs in areas more than 180 feet deep. Live colonies are often brown, yellowish-green, and shades of blue.
