Snorkeling is an adventurous experience. You’ll have the opportunity to see the beauty of undersea life from a fresh vantage point and gain a new appreciation for the wonders of the aquatic world. If you’re preparing for your first snorkeling activity, use the following guidelines to ensure a safe and delightful experience.

Do:

Find a buddy.

Even though you aren’t diving deep into the water, there’s safety in numbers. If it’s your first time snorkeling, you will feel more confident and comfortable when you know somebody nearby can assist you in an unexpected situation. You can also have a better time knowing that there’s someone around to share this new experience with.

Wear sunscreen.

Wearing sunscreen is essential whenever you plan to be outside. Even on cloudy days, potent ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate and cause damage to the skin. For the best protection, purchase a broad-spectrum sunblock that combats both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a marine-friendly product since chemicals like oxybenzone or octinoxate can cause harm to aquatic animals, including coral. You can also look for sun-protective apparel as an added layer of protection.

Don’t:

Snorkel after eating.

It’s fine to eat before snorkeling, but don’t do so right prior to getting in the water. Being active while having a full stomach will interfere with your ability to enjoy the experience. The discomfort can be amplified and lead to seasickness due to the salt water and rolling waves. To prevent this situation and move comfortably in the ocean, eat light foods like fruits and vegetables instead of a heavier meal.

Stray too far away.

Always note your location and be mindful of where you can snorkel before beginning. If you’re part of a group, the leader will guide you on this matter. Otherwise, ask if there’s a designated area for snorkelers. These spots are safe for swimmers, and boats won’t encroach upon them.
