An enjoyable part of a snorkeling expedition is the opportunity to take pictures of aquatic scenery otherwise rarely seen. In recent years, underwater camera technology has come far enough that some of the most advanced pieces of equipment are available and affordable for the general public. Take memorable shots by following the basic preparatory steps below.

How to Take High-Quality Photos While Snorkeling

1. Maintain a Proper Distance

Light behaves differently underwater. The more distance between you and your subject, the harder it will be to make it out in detail, and the more washed-out the exposures will look.

As long as it’s safe to do so, try to get close to any animals or underwater objects. However, don’t get near enough to startle the subject. Additionally, you should never touch or disturb any fish or other marine life you’re trying to photograph.

2. Take Multiple Shots

One of the oldest rules of photography, whether shooting on land or underwater, is to take multiple exposures. Even the most practiced photographers can miss their opportunity to take a truly memorable picture.

Another common issue is shooting a blurry or low-quality photo by accident. By taking multiple shots, you increase the chances of getting several good exposures to choose from.

3. Turn Off the Flash

There will probably be plenty of light if you’re snorkeling in relatively shallow water on a bright day. Although a flash is useful in deeper, darker waters, it can result in a washed-out photo if you’re closer to the surface. Instead, rely on natural light levels to bring out the beauty of the marine life and underwater terrain you’re shooting.
