Reefs are large structures of coral, which are marine invertebrates that have a hard exoskeleton. They form in oceans throughout the world, including the waters surrounding Hawaii. Their magnificent size, stunning colors, and interesting shapes make them a must-see on snorkeling trips. Here are some species you can find while exploring Maui's waters.

4 Corals to Observe On Your Snorkeling Trip

1. Finger

Also known as Porites porites, this hard coral has short, finger-like branches with distended or flattened tips. The limbs are often curved or hooked. They also grow in all directions, either in densely packed patches or more widely-spaced ones.

This type typically has a beautiful white, pale blue, or gray hue and often develops in shallow waters at a maximum depth of 100 feet. Due to its slow growth, finger coral is among the oldest life forms on earth, with some reefs being over 1,000 years old.

2. Lobe

Porites lobate, or lobe coral, is a stony invertebrate that grows on reefs at depths of anywhere from 10 to 150 feet under the sea. It is common in Hawaii's Pacific waters, known for its distinctive conical shape, irregular clusters, and greenish-yellow or tan coloration. Though it grows less than one centimeter annually, colonies of lobe coral can reach massive heights and widths of 20 by 20 feet.

3. Cauliflower

Cauliflower coral, or Pocillopora meandrina, grows in shallow waters, often less than 10 feet deep. However, this species can develop at depths of up to 90 feet beneath the sea.

As its name suggests, it forms clusters that resemble cauliflower florets. It also often has a pink or tan coloration. It is smaller than other coral types, with a maximum length of 15 inches.

4. Rice

Montipora capitate, known as rice coral, is a common species that develops in still-water habitats. It often forms beneath reefs, where it remains protected from wave surges.

This invertebrate varies in shape, appearing as spiked peaks or rounded, flattened segments, and can grow several feet wide. It often has a creamy or dark brown coloration. However, a variation of this coral that grows in Hawaiian waters has a bright blue hue, making it a coveted sight on snorkeling trips.
