Sea turtles possess an almost otherworldly beauty. For those who love exploring the underwater world, it can be awe-inspiring to witness them in all of their magnificent glory. Hawaii boasts five different species of these beautiful creatures, making the waters here a wonderful tourist attraction to explore during a snorkeling expedition. Have you ever wondered just what makes these turtles so intriguing? Here are five facts you may not know.

5 Fun Facts About Sea Turtles

1. They Can Grow Quite Heavy

Sea turtles are anything but diminutive. The leatherback sea turtle can range anywhere from 550 to 2000 pounds and measure up to six feet long. This hefty variety is distinguished by its thick, rubber-like skin instead of the traditional hard shell. What’s responsible for their weight? They enjoy a diet rich in jellyfish!

2. Their Hatchlings Don’t Always Survive

Unfortunately many baby sea turtles don’t make it to adulthood because the water is full of obstacles, like sharks and fish, along with fatal contaminants like trash. If the hatchling does not reach the sea from its incubation space in time, it could also die of dehydration.

3. They Tend to Cry a Lot

Lahaina, HI snorkelingIf you’re snorkeling and pause in wonder because you’re witnessing a sea turtle crying, don’t be surprised. It’s one of the most practical things they do! The tears are actually a salty liquid released through glands behind the eyes. Because they consume so much saltwater, their bodies restore balance by eliminating salt through these tears.

4. They Lived Among the Dinosaurs

It’s amazing, but true: prehistoric sea turtles lived among the dinosaurs some 160 million years ago. The turtles of the time were possibly over 13 feet long, based on a fossil discovered in South Dakota.

5. They Can Easily Hold Their Breath

Humans require specialty snorkeling equipment to remain underwater for extended periods, but sea turtles don’t have that luxury. They can, however, stay underwater if they’re sleeping for up to seven hours. Depending on their activity level, they do need to come to the surface for breath eventually. Busy sea turtles may draw breath at least a few times in an hour.
