If you’ve just booked your first snorkeling tour, you’re likely eager to explore the ocean and see underwater creatures up close. However, while this activity might seem self-explanatory, there are still a few important rules to follow.

Do:

Wear equipment that fits.

Masks, fins, and other snorkeling equipment come in different sizes. Try on the equipment beforehand to make sure it fits properly. You should be able to move your head around freely without the mask falling off. The fins you rent should be neither too tight nor too loose. Loose fins can fall off, while tight fins will make your feet hurt.

Swim slowly.

Many first-time snorkelers get excited and swim quickly underwater, but doing so will tire you out and shorten your trip. Instead, swim at a relaxed speed that allows you to breathe slowly through your snorkel.

Don’t:

Touch anything.

snorkelingWhen you’re snorkeling for the first time and marveling at the coral reef and its many inhabitants, you may want to reach out and touch them. Resist that temptation—touching or chasing protected marine life is illegal, not to mention harmful to the creatures. Some might even try to defend themselves and hurt you. For your safety and theirs, keep your distance and admire from afar.

Go alone.

It’s never a good idea to swim or snorkel by yourself, especially if you don’t have any experience. Go with a group of people you trust. If something happens during the trip, there will be people around to help you.
