Whale watching in Hawaii is an incredible opportunity to view local wildlife in their natural habitat. To make the most of this experience, learn about the best time to go and what to expect.

When Is the Best Time to Whale Watch?

In Hawaii, the whale watching season runs from December 15 through May 15. During this time, up to 15,000 of the giant creatures arrive in the area as they swim south from Alaska to give birth in the warm Maui waters.

Experienced watchers may notice the first whales around October, but most arrive in the area in mid-December. January through March is the peak season. Many reside between Hilo and Hanalei, so look for whale watching tours in this region.

What Should You Expect?

whale watching Maui HIDuring a two-hour tour, you’ll head out from the dock with other whale enthusiasts. The boat will travel to areas where pods have recently been spotted. On-board naturalists will provide educational commentary on the species and their unique breeding ground around Maui.

Because of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, boats cannot get closer than 100 yards from the whales. However, you may get “mugged” by a whale if they swim close by the boat when it’s stationary.

Bring binoculars for the best view of the whales, and charge up your camera battery before boarding so you can capture memories of a lifetime!
