If you’re exploring Maui while on vacation, snorkeling is a fun way to experience the island’s unique aquatic life. During your trip, keep an eye out for these stunning species of tropical fish, marine animals, and coral reef creatures.

What Kinds of Marine Life Will You See When Snorkeling Around Maui?

1. Sea Turtles

In the water, you might catch a glimpse of one of the Hawaiian Islands’ native species of sea turtles: the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, the Leatherback, and the Hawksbill. Though they’re endangered, these turtles are known to frequent Maui, where they have large nesting grounds. Sea turtles can often be found swimming with schools of fish, which like to eat algae off of their shells.

2. Spiny Sea Urchin

Spiny sea urchins can commonly be found under rocks and coral heads. They come in all colors and spine shapes, from the thick red spines of the Slate-Pencil Sea Urchin to the sharp pink and purple spines of the Rock Boring Sea Urchin. Be careful not to touch these creatures while you’re snorkeling around rocks and coral reefs!

3. Manta Rays

If you’re snorkeling in an area rich in zooplankton, you may get lucky and spot a manta ray. Manta rays typically feed on crustaceans, small fish, and plankton. These graceful marine creatures have wingspans that can reach up to 30 feet.

4. Ornate Butterflyfish

snorkelingWhile snorkeling, you’ll likely encounter various species of tropical fish. There are 25 different species of butterflyfish alone in Hawaii. All of them have unique stripes, patches, and spots in brilliant colors like yellow, green, blue, and orange.

5. Moray Eel

Because they lack fins like other marine species, moray eels look like large underwater snakes. You might spot one roving around a coral reef, opening and closing its mouth. It may look scary, but that’s how moray eels breathe. Even though they would rather retreat when they feel threatened, it’s best not to try to touch them or provoke them.
