Migration & Mating

Starting in November, humpback whales begin their trek from the frigid waters of Alaska to the more favorable conditions of Hawaii. This migration period typically runs until May, at which point they will head back to Alaska. Once the pods reach Hawaii and have the benefit of increased visibility and fewer predators, they’ll begin mating. Birthing & Early Development

Once the female becomes pregnant, she’ll have between 11 to 12 months before she gives birth. After the following year’s migration, she’ll give birth and begin raising her calf.

During her time in Hawaii, the mother will focus on protecting her calf so it can gain strength and prepare to migrate back. She’ll keep the calf away from other whales that might try to mate with her as well as predators.
