Humpback whales are fantastic creatures that deserved to be photographed beautifully. If you’re interested in the adventure of whale watching, learn how to take pictures of them before you see them out on the water.

4 Photography Tips to Use While Whale Watching

1. Don’t Use a Tripod

Since whales aren’t going to pose for you, a stationary camera likely won’t capture their dynamic motion. Boats also tend to rock and sway, so a mounted camera may get blurry photos.

Instead, keep your camera in hand and track the whale with your eyes. Use a strap to loop the camera around your neck so you don’t accidentally drop it.

2. Wrap Your Camera in a Plastic Bag

Most cameras aren’t built to withstand saltwater splashing against the lens. Cut a hole through a plastic bag so your lens can poke through; the material will protect your camera from ocean spray. For a cellphone, pack it in a waterproof case.

Use a microfiber glass cleaning rag in between shots to remove any droplets from the lens.

3. Shoot in Bursts

With burst mode, the camera will take multiple shots when you hold down the capture button, making it more likely that you’ll get at least one good shot during your whale watching experience.

4. Use Autofocus

Too many photos come out blurry, and fixing this is almost impossible in editing programs. Autofocus will fix this problem: the lens will adjust to whatever it faces. If your autofocus can calculate in both horizontal and vertical axes, it will focus on moving objects easier. Read your camera’s manual or search online to find out how to turn on this setting.
