Denali National Park offers many opportunities for wildlife viewing in addition to its gorgeous, mountainous landscapes. If you are planning a trip to this destination for the first time, you'll want to know what animals you can spot as you book a room at the local inn. Below are common wild animals who call the natural area home.

What Wildlife Roams Denali National Park?

1. Dall Sheep

These fuzzy relatives of bighorn sheep have curled horns and thick coats, as well as a talent for navigating rocky, sloped terrain. They frequent the park's hills, using them for food and predator protection. You'll probably see the Dall sheep from your vehicle along the mountains near Igloo Canyon. However, they can also appear near the Polychrome and Eielson Visitor Center.

If your trip includes hiking, you might see herds on Mount Margaret or Mount Wright. Should you see the sheep on foot, they will likely move away from you. However, bulls can become aggressive if they feel cornered, so maintain your distance.

2. Moose

The largest member of the hooved animal family, the moose can weigh over 1,000 pounds and grow over 6 feet tall. There are nearly 2,000 of them in Denali National Park, with sightings common at Mile 15 or between the park entrance and the Savage River. While moose are considered calm animals, they defend themselves if they feel threatened.

In the spring, you can often spot their calves around the Riley Creek Campground, but you should never approach them. Their mothers are likely nearby and quickly become aggressive in defending their young. For these reasons, maintain a distance of about 165 feet from any moose you spot.

3. Grizzly Bears

While black bears wander through Denali National Park, you are more likely to see their larger brown counterparts. Grizzlies can be found throughout, especially along the Teklanika, Savage, and Toklat Rivers. You might also spot them in high-alpine locations, including the Thoroughfare, Sable, and Highway Passes. Bears of all kinds typically avoid humans but can cause injuries if they think you are prey. Remain safe by admiring from afar, at a minimum of 300 yards, and do not run if you encounter one.
