Denali National Park offers many unique experiences, including an up-close and personal look at its abundant wildlife. Although a particular animal spotting is never guaranteed, the chance to view spectacular creatures is why many tourists plan to visit this attraction after booking a hotel room. Here's what to know about the animals who call this site home.

What Kind of Wildlife Can You Spot?

While birds and fish are abundant, this national park is best known for housing five particular animals: moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears. However, there are various other mammals to see, including foxes, snowshoe hares, red squirrels, marmots, and pikas.

Of the 169 species of birds, visitors often see ravens, mew gulls, gray jays, and ptarmigans. If you're lucky, you may even spot a bald eagle. As for fish, there are 14 different species living in the area. However, it is unlikely to find many other cold-blooded amphibians or reptiles.

Where Can You See Wildlife?

The types of animals you want to see will determine where in Denali National Park you head toward after leaving the hotel. Here are a few creatures and where they often roam:

  • Bears: Black bear sightings are rare, but you can often see grizzly varieties along the Savage, Teklanika, and Toklat Rivers. You may also see them in high-alpine areas, like the Sable Pass, Highway Pass, and Thoroughfare Pass.
  • Moose: In the fall, many see the male species looking for a mate between Mile 9 and Mile 13.
  • Dall Sheep: These animals often wander the mountains overlooking Igloo Canyon and Miles 34 to 38.
  • Birds: Bird watchers are in luck at Denali National Parks. These creatures are scattered throughout the park, typically along creeks or drainages, as well as brushy areas. You may find owls and golden eagles along the ridgelines in the thicker forests.
