Denali National Parks is a popular attraction for those interested in adventure and nature-based tourism. It's home to bears, caribou, moose, wolves, and many other mammals and birds, making it ideal for wildlife viewing. For the best access, be sure to book a hotel in the shadow of Denali and set out on one of these self-guided and self-paced wildlife viewing excursions.

Where Are the Best Spots to See Wildlife in Denali?

1. Savage River Loop Trail and Primrose Ridge

These are the first two wildlife viewing sites you'll encounter on Denali Park Road once you enter the park. The Savage River Loop Trail is an easy journey of 2 miles that follows the tundra along the river. At this site, there's a good chance of seeing caribou, marmots, and sheep.

Once you've completed the loop, head further down the road to the next stop: Primrose Ridge. This is a more informal hike that requires a moderate level of intensity. However, you'll be rewarded by the end. A bench at the top of the ridge offers stunning, sweeping views and plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, especially birdwatching.

2. Sable Mountain Trail and Pass

Sable Mountain Trail is another excellent birdwatching site, a bit further down Denali Park Road. Catch this trail after crossing Tatter Creek, ascend a steep ravine, and drink in the beautiful panorama of Sable Pass. Birds abound here, so keep your binoculars and birding book handy. As for the timeframe, expect the hike to take between four and five hours.

While you'll enjoy views of the Pass, there's only one way to get somewhat close to it: on the park's shuttle bus. This tourism feature will allow you to get off briefly and take pictures. As the site is undisturbed, the area is full of wildlife, especially grizzly bears.

3. Kettle Ponds

For a more adventurous tourism experience, head down Denali Park Road to one of the last prime wildlife viewing areas before reaching the community of Kantishna. The Kettle Ponds consist of hundreds of small kettle lakes, which are ground depressions formed by retreating glaciers. They provide vital habitats for beavers, birds, moose, and waterfowl.

When you need a place to stay that's accessible to all of these attractions, book a room at Denali Totem Inn. Situated a few miles north of the park, they provide clean, comfortable, well-appointed rooms and an on-site restaurant and bar where tourists can enjoy a meal or a drink before or after sightseeing. Make Denali Totem Inn your home base for all your Alaska adventures. Call (907) 683-6500 to reserve a room, or visit them online to explore their accommodations.
