Many visitors to Alaska enjoy hiking through the Denali National Park, but it’s imperative they carefully prepare for their winter excursions. Regardless of which trail you take, there may be varying temperatures, precipitation, and surface conditions. Before leaving the lodging, make sure you’ve packed for the journey appropriately.

4 Items to Bring on a Hike Through the Snow

1. Protective Wear

Conditions may rapidly change as you climb upward, so pack clothes to accommodate the changing weather. Bring insulated gloves, a lightweight and heavyweight fleece hat, warm socks, and a gaiter face mask to protect any exposed skin. A water- and windproof jacket is also recommended.

2. Guidance Tools

lodgingElectronic devices aren’t always reliable in the wilderness since their wireless connections may drop. Use a map and compass to direct yourself instead.

Bring a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries to guide you in conditions with poor visibility. Sunglasses are also recommended if you’ll be hiking in the snow, as the powder can reflect the sun and sunburn the skin and eyes.

3. Food & Water

If you’re going on a day-long excursion, pack at least two quarts of drinking water per person, as well as high-energy foods and snacks. Most winter hikers need to eat at least 3,500 calories a day to have the energy to walk, climb, and snowshoe. Your lodging may offer suitable snacks at its on-site restaurant or gift shop if you forget to bring enough from home.

4. Waterproof Backpack

A waterproof backpack will protect your belongings no matter which conditions you encounter. Winter hikes require more gear, so a 40- to 45-liter backpack will give you enough room for all the seasonal essentials. Waterproof pack covers are also available if your bag isn’t made of moisture-resistant materials.
