1. Declining Range

You can normally open the fob case with a flathead screwdriver. Remove the battery and replace it with a new one. Pay attention to the old one's positive and negative poles (+ and - symbols), and place the new battery in the same position.

2. Inconsistent Operation

Another sign of a failing battery is when you must press the "lock" or "unlock" button multiple times before the keyless system engages. A dying battery produces a signal too weak to register with the car's computer. You can extend the battery life by storing it at least 10 feet away from the car. Storing it overnight inside or near the vehicle permits continuous signal transmission, which drains the charge. Heat does, as well, so keep the fob in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.

3.  Delay

Perhaps you need only to depress the fob button once, but there is a delay of 2 or more seconds before the lock mechanism engages. This is sometimes accompanied by a failure of the lights to flash—and/or horn to sound—as the door locks or unlocks. Some vehicles with a push-button ignition have key fobs with a power-saving mode that blocks signal transmission.
