As a first-time wearer of contact lenses, you probably have quite a few questions, such as how to take care of them. While it may take a little getting used to, most people can adapt to wearing lenses if they have the right information. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when you begin wearing them on a daily basis.

Do:

Wash your hands.

Clean hands are important when putting in or removing your lenses. Without washing them, you could transfer germs or debris to your eyes, leading to infections or injury. Once your contacts are in, refrain from rubbing your eyes, as this can dislodge the lens and cause an uncomfortable feeling.

Follow your optometrist’s directions.

contact lensesAlong with keeping your hands clean, you should clean your lenses whenever you take them out of the case. Your optometrist will generally provide instructions that include using a sterilized solution to rinse your lenses and soak them overnight. Additionally, always use your storage case. They are designed to prevent your lenses from getting exposed to contaminants. Avoid placing them anywhere else, such as in a plastic bag or another type of container.

Don’t:

Switch lenses.

You will receive left and right lenses that should be worn in the correct eye at all times. If the prescription for each is different, you will experience vision issues if you forget to do this. Use the same routine each time you put your contact lenses in to prevent confusion.

Hesitate to call your eye doctor.

If you experience problems, such as swelling, redness, or irritation, call your eye doctor as soon as possible. You may have an eye infection that can have serious effects if left untreated. You may also need to use glasses until the issue is resolved to prevent further irritation.
