Hearing loss is a common problem that can make even simple tasks, such as talking on the phone or watching television, challenging. If you need hearing aids to amplify sounds, there are several types to select from. Each aid offers different benefits in light of personal preferences and the degree of hearing loss. Below are popular options to consider.

What Are Common Types of Hearing Aids?

1. Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

These aids feature hard plastic cases that house sound-amplifying electronics. They are positioned behind the ears and feature clear plastic tubes containing wires that connect to earmolds. BTE aids are easy to clean and handle, are regarded for their durability, and offer the long battery life that smaller hearing aids do not necessarily provide. However, some users find them bulky or difficult to wear because of glasses, as they are the largest devices of their kind. They are used to correct mild to severe hearing loss.

2. In-the-Ear (ITE)

ITE aids fit within the outside portion of the ears, making them smaller than BTE models. They are one-piece devices that are considered more discreet than BTE options due to their size and ability to match skin tone. ITE devices help individuals with mild to severe hearing loss but are not ideal for children, since their ears are still growing. These aids are also considered relatively easy to handle compared to other small hearing devices. Some come with telecoils that connect to phones for easy listening.

3. In-the-Canal (ITC)

The smaller version of the ITE hearing aid, the In-the-Canal aid, fits partially in the ear canal and partially in the outside of the ear. Its discreet appearance keeps it, as well as the completely-in-the-canal (CIC) aid, in demand. The latter aid fits entirely within the ear canal and is virtually unnoticeable. Because both of these aids are so small, their battery life is shorter and they can be problematic for individuals with mobility issues to work with. They are used to correct mild to moderate hearing loss.
