How Do Religions Practice Funeral Services Differently?

Buddhism

For followers of the Buddhist religion, memorials services are held on the third, seventh, 49^th, and 100^th days after death. A wake is often held in a calm and soothing room filled with flowers, candles, incense, and fruit offerings.

Chanting by monks may also occur during the wake, which can last as long as the family wishes. Both cremation and traditional burial services are in line with this faith. Many families encourage wearing white to the funeral as a sign of seriousness as well as grief. 

Catholicism

Catholic memorials often include a vigil the day before the funeral. Family and friends gather at a funeral home or church to pray, light candles, and honor the deceased.

Eulogies may be given during the vigil as these speeches are not a part of traditional Catholic funeral services. A priest will preside over the main ceremony, delivering a sermon and words of remembrance. While burial was a strict tradition in the past, cremation has also become acceptable for Catholics. 

Judaism

In Judaism, there are two stages of mourning. The first, known as “Shiva,” is a seven-day gathering of the immediate family following the funeral. During this week, a candle will be lit each day, prayers and mourning take place, and family will refrain from working and following their regular routine. 

The second stage, known as “Shloshim,” will last until the 30^th day after the funeral. Mourners will return to normal life but continue to pray daily. They’re encouraged to make donations to charitable organizations in the name of the deceased. Following the funeral service, a reception with food and drink is common. Eggs will often be incorporated into the meal to represent the cycle of life.
