As the baby boomer generation moves into retirement, many are thinking about whether their homes are well-suited to their changing needs. Home remodeling makes aging in place possible, which means staying in the home you know and love throughout your golden years. Make the most of this project by considering features for the future.

Home Design Tips for Aging in Place

1. Second-Floor Accessibility

If your home has multiple levels, stairs will become an issue as you age. There are three main options: single-level living, an elevator, or a stair glide. Living on one floor tends to be ideal for seniors, so ensure everything you need is on the first floor — bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and laundry room. An elevator is the next most convenient, as you can easily move between floors, even in a wheelchair or carrying large packages. Finally, a stair glide is more affordable and less invasive than an elevator, but it can be difficult for those who have difficulty maneuvering into a glide chair. Decide which is best for you based on budget and needs.

2. Showersaging in place

A curbless shower with a curtain is the easiest choice for those with limited mobility. These don’t require stepping over a ledge like in a traditional tub, maneuvering through a small doorway like with a walk-in tub, or opening a swinging glass door. For extra stability, add a built-in shower seat under the showerhead and controls, a grab bar on the wall, and an anti-slip surface on the floor.

3. Doorways

Widening doorways and hallways is a smart choice. It will require a lot of work, so handle this during an accessible remodeling project. Make every doorway at least 36 inches wide, which allows space for a wheelchair and a caregiver to push it. Keep all hallways at least 36 inches wide as well. Put easy-to-grasp handles on all doors; skip traditional doorknobs and opt for levers instead.
