A tooth filling repairs a small cavity in the enamel with a material such as tooth-colored composite. This prevents decay from spreading while maintaining the integrity of the tooth. If you have a cavity and your dentist recommends a filling, here’s what you should and shouldn’t do afterward to ensure a successful restoration.

Do:

Check your bite.

Sometimes, excess filling material can cause a tooth to feel too tall or large in your mouth. This can create friction with surrounding teeth, which may result in erosion. Fortunately, the dentist can gently file down the extra material to ensure a smooth bite that feels completely natural. Be sure to check your bite for comfort before leaving the office.

Take over-the-counter pain relievers.

Your dentist will need to remove affected enamel to prevent infection and make room for the filling material. As such, a tooth filling may cause minor, temporary discomfort. If you’re feeling any pain after your appointment, take over-the-counter pain medications as directed for relief.

Don’t:

Eat sticky or hard foods.

To give your tooth filling a chance to settle in place, avoid having any hard or sticky foods after your appointment. Hard candy, gum, nuts, and hard pretzels should be avoided for up to two weeks. These foods could damage your filling, requiring further dental work.

Have hot or cold items.

As with most dental work, having a filling done may create temporary sensitivity in the affected tooth. You’ll therefore want to avoid especially hot or cold food or drinks at least 24 hours after the appointment. With that in mind, you may find that lukewarm soup or mashed potatoes are ideal meal options during your recovery, as they won’t put as much pressure on your sensitive enamel as harder foods.
