Orthodontics is the treatment of dental misalignments that cause crooked teeth. Invisalign® clear aligners and traditional metal braces are the most common orthodontic treatments, each of which offers distinct benefits. Here are a few fast facts about each procedure to help you make an informed decision.

Invisalign

With the Invisalign system, patients are provided clear aligners that gently push teeth into the correct position. Over the course of treatment, the dentist provides new aligners until your smile is corrected. How long the process takes usually depends on the severity of the misalignment, but most patients wear their aligners for one or two years.

Clear aligners are convenient because they can be removed when eating or drinking. However, the longer your aligners are out, the longer your treatment will take. Aligners must also be cleaned daily and stored safely to prevent damage and defects.

Traditional Braces

InvisalignWire braces are affixed to teeth using a strong dental adhesive. You’ll need to visit the dentist regularly so wires can be tightened to guide your teeth into the correct position. Traditional braces work quicker than clear aligners, and can also be used to treat more substantial misalignment.

However, some complain that metal braces are uncomfortable. They can also be more noticeable than clear aligners and can’t be taken out when eating or drinking. Dental wax or oral numbing gels can be used after adjustments to relieve any discomfort.
