A root canal is a common procedure that usually occurs when an infection reaches deep into the tooth. It allows for the removal of damaged material and reduces the risk of a recurrence. However, without knowing what to expect, the anticipation may produce a level of concern. Put your mind at ease by taking a closer look at the following and becoming familiar with the basics of this treatment.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

The entire procedure requires only an hour and a half to complete. The dentist may start by preparing the site, which involves an in-depth inspection as well as administering a local anesthetic. Once you’re fully numb, they’ll drill into the tooth and clear out the infection, applying disinfectant to keep the area clean.

The dentist will then fill the opening, carefully shaping the canals to ensure that there are no air pockets. After it cures, you’re free to go home and recuperate.

How Long Is the Recovery Process?

It’s possible that you’ll experience a level of discomfort and swelling in the days following the procedure. This should subside after 24 to 48 hours, so take over-the-counter pain medications when necessary. Keep up with the prescribed antibiotics, as these will lower the potential for infection and promote healing.

What Foods Can I Eat?

Dentists will usually recommend avoiding hard foods for the first couple of days. It prevents putting pressure on the tooth and gives it a chance to recover. Smoothies and milkshakes are popular options. Just be sure to add a few fruits and greens to provide a nutritional boost. Soups and pastas are ideal for the main meals of the day, supplying the energy you require without the effort of chewing.
