If you work with heavy machinery on a daily basis, you likely have a bulk oil supply on hand. It’s crucial to keeping parts lubricated, and to be effective, you need to store it properly. Use the following tips to protect your investment and ensure quality oil helps your machinery function optimally.

Tips for Storing Bulk Oil

1. Have the Right Tank

The right tank will keep your bulk oil safe from contamination. Choose one made of stainless steel, mild steel plate, anodized aluminum, or plastic. You’ll want to add rust-proof and oil-resistant paint as well as an epoxy coating for further protection. Make sure your tank is properly sealed and stored in a dedicated storage and dispensary area.

2. Add a Breather

bulk oilThe headspace—the area above your tank—is where many contaminants, such as moisture, enter. A breather acts similar to an oil filter by capturing contaminant particles and moisture before they can taint the oil. Hydraulic fluids will need a finer breather filtration system than gear oils.

3. Regulate the Indoor Climate

Humid environments or fluctuating temperatures will produce different levels of condensation throughout the day. To prevent these from settling inside and outside the bulk oil tank or in the headspace, make sure you have effective climate control systems and ventilation in the storage room. Vapor extraction fans, dry cleaning systems, and dehumidifiers in the headspace will all reduce contamination.
