Headaches are common, so it may not occur to you to consult a doctor if you get one. Nevertheless, there are certain circumstances when they may warrant a trip to a medical clinic. After all, they could be a symptom of larger problems, such as meningitis, encephalitis, cancer, an aneurysm, or a stroke, so it’s often better to be safe than sorry. Knowing when to treat a headache at home and when to get the opinion of a physician could significantly impact your health and quality of life.

How Do You Know When to Make a Doctor’s Appointment?

You’re probably no stranger to headaches. However, if they’ve been occurring more frequently and/or with greater intensity than usual—to the point that they affect your sleep, mood, and ability to carry out daily tasks—it could indicate an underlying issue that requires medical attention.

doctorThis is especially true if you can’t explain them away with sleep deprivation, illness, dehydration, or an increase in external stress, and if responsible use of over-the-counter medicine makes little to no difference. It could also be a problem if your headaches are occurring three times or more per week or seem to be caused by exercise or other strenuous activity, including coughing, sneezing, or even bending over.

Without other symptoms, though, you shouldn’t need an urgent visit. Simply schedule an appointment to see your doctor at your earliest convenience.

When Should You Seek Emergency Care?

Sometimes, headaches are a sign that you need immediate care from medical professionals. Even if the headache is just sudden and severe, that’s reason enough to find a doctor right away. However, regardless of the intensity or speed of development, they often suggest a medical emergency when accompanied by:

  • Trouble seeing, breathing, walking, staying balanced, speaking, or understanding speech

  • High fever

  • Rash

  • Stiff neck

  • Paralysis, numbness, or weakness on one side of the body

  • Fainting

  • Seizures

  • General confusion

  • Nausea and vomiting, if they’re not caused by the flu or a stomach virus

In these severe cases, avoid driving yourself to a medical clinic if possible. Have a friend or family member take you or call an ambulance.
