As the holidays approach, many people prepare for much-needed vacations. Unfortunately, when some travelers return from their festive getaways, they may need immediate water damage repair. No one should arrive home from vacation to find their pipes have burst. Here are five ways to prevent water damage while you’re away from home.

5 Ways to Avoid Water Damage When Out of Town

1. Restrict Water Supply

Close the valve to your main water supply line to prevent floods and leaks. However, if someone will be watching your home while you’re away, don’t turn off the main valve. Instead, close off only some supply lines, such as a line to a third-floor bathroom toilet.

2. Prepare Toilets & Sinks

Pour nontoxic antifreeze into toilet bowls to prevent water from freezing and decrease the risk of porcelain cracks. Also, open the doors under each sink to let air circulate around pipes and to prevent breaks.

3. Set the Thermostat

4. Check the Sump Pump

A defective sump pump may cause a flood in your basement during a heavy storm. To ensure your pump is working, pour a bucket of water into the tank. The pump should turn on, and you should hear the motor running.

5. Get Help From a Neighbor

Give a trusted neighbor your contact information and a spare key. Ask them to watch your home in your absence. If they notice a leak, they can call for water damage repair before it worsens.
