Fog increases the inherent risks of driving by reducing visibility, and therefore, reaction time. By taking a few extra precautions under such conditions, you can mitigate the chance of being involved in an accident and the need for extensive collision repair. Here are some tips to help you stay safe while driving through fog.

Safety Tips for Driving in Foggy Weather

1. Always Keep the Lights On

Fog significantly reduces visibility while driving. In severe cases, you won't be able to see beyond a few feet. Regardless of the time of day, keep the lights on so you can see better and, just as important, other drivers can better see your vehicle. It might sound counterintuitive, but keep your lights on low beam, so you're not blinded by your high beams reflecting off the fog.

2. Drive Slower than Usual

Since you'll only be able to see a short distance in foggy conditions, there will be less time to react to obstacles, turns, and other cars. Adjust your speed accordingly by going slower, so there is time to avoid danger.  Driving slower will lessen any impact if you do get into an accident, leading to less damage and fewer collision repairs.

3. Keep Your Distance

In addition to driving slower, keep your distance from the vehicle ahead of you to increase the time you have to react should the driver suddenly stop or swerve. Follow at least five seconds behind the car in front to be safe.
