After your surf lessons, you’ll likely want to hit the waves and practice what you learned. Although the surfing community is welcoming, there are a few basic etiquette rules that you should be aware of so that you don’t upset anyone. Here’s what you should know before grabbing your board.

Do:

Be safe.

If the wind is too gusty or the waves too frequent, stay on land for the day. When you choose to go out in questionable conditions, you’re endangering your life as well as the lives of the people who may need to rescue you.

Get your own board.

When taking surfing lessons, many people borrow gear from friends. While this is an inexpensive way to get started, you’ll eventually need to get your own equipment. Purchasing a board, leash, and wetsuit will prevent your friends from getting annoyed that you’re constantly borrowing their gear.

Don’t:

Be rude.

surfing lessons Maui HIAlways be respectful of other surfers by giving the right of way to people who are riding a wave. Never snake another surfer or paddle across their wave when they’re in position. Wait your turn for the next opportunity so that they have an excellent ride—they’ll show you the same respect. If you accidentally cut off another surfer, apologize and let them have the next one.

Litter.

Since you surf on the ocean at its beaches, it’s your responsibility to keep these areas clean and safe. Never leave trash behind, and pick up spare pieces of garbage you see floating in the water or buried in the sand. Follow local rules, and stay within the designated surf zones to protect the local wildlife and remain safe on the water.
