If you’ve just started taking surf lessons, you’ll likely make a few mistakes until you master your technique. While you get used to the waves, here are five novice mistakes to avoid.
What to Avoid When You’re New to Surfing
1. Looking Down
While you might feel compelled to look down at the board to find your balance, you’ll miss what’s ahead of you. Instead, focus on the horizon, even when you’re paddling. Not only does this keep you steady, but it also ensures you keep an eye on your path and whatever comes your way.
2. Flailing Your Arms
Many beginners will flail as they try to balance on the board; however, this will make you fall faster. Don’t raise your arms higher than your shoulders so your center of gravity remains low.
3. Locking Your Knees
Tensing and locking your knees will throw off your balance quickly. To remain stable, bend your knees. This also stops the board from sliding out from under you as you move across the water.
4. Practicing Only in the Water
Practicing on dry land is essential for learning how to pop up properly. Without the water moving underneath you, you can train your muscles to get in the proper stance on the board quickly, so it comes naturally when you do it at sea.
5. Timing Incorrectly
As soon as your wave comes up, begin paddling, and maintain your speed to align with the wave. When you feel it lift you, pop up. Missing this moment results in wiping out.
