An OB-GYN or obstetrician-gynecologist is a specialist in women's health, and visiting one regularly is essential to keeping your reproductive system in good shape. Aside from your routine yearly checkup, you should also visit your OBGYN if you notice any of these signs of a problem.

3 Signs It's Time to Visit the OB-GYN

1. Pain or Burning When You Urinate

If you begin to experience uncomfortable burning sensations when you urinate, this could be a sign of urinary tract infection (UTI). In some cases, you will notice blood in your urine and even have a fever. A UTI that gets out of control may lead to a severe kidney infection, so do not delay consulting with your gynecologist to evaluate your symptoms and suggest the best course of treatment.

2. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge and Itching

Vaginal discharge is normal and will vary throughout your menstrual cycle. However, if you notice an unusual change in color and consistency together with itchiness and foul smell with your discharge, it’s time to visit your OB-GYN. These can be signs of yeast infection, and your doctor gyno may write you a prescription to treat it. They may also recommend an STI screening to check for underlying infections.

3. Breast Pain or Discomfort

Another sign that it’s time to see your doctor is when you feel pain or discomfort in your breast, especially when you feel lumps, inflammation, or swelling. Changes in your nipples, such as redness or warmth, should also be disclosed to your OB-GYN. Your gynecologist will help you figure out whether these signs are normal or if you need additional tests and medical attention.
