4 Common Injuries Seen In Dancers
Dancers push their bodies to impressive levels of athleticism and flexibility, but rigorous training and packed rehearsal schedules can sometimes result in injuries. Through exercises and strength training, physical therapy can help athletes heal and recover from injuries such as sprains and misalignments, as well as prevent them entirely. Here are some of the most common injuries we see in dancers.
Common Injuries Dancers May Experience
1. Sprained Ankle
Dancers frequently push their bodies into challenging poses that are outside the range of motion the body is accustomed to. This leaves them susceptible to tears in the ankle ligaments, ankle weakness, and sprains. To prevent these injuries, dancers must perform targeted exercises to strengthen all sides of their ankles.
2. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Tight hamstrings and calves, along with weak quadriceps, can put pressure on the kneecap, or patella. This causes pain in the knees, which can decrease the range of motion and interfere with regular activities such as climbing stairs, kneeling and squatting. To help dancers prevent patellofemoral injury, physical therapists can help them stretching their IT band and strengthening their core and hip.
3. Hip Impingement
Hip impingement, or compression at the edge of the hip joint, is caused by joint wear, muscle strain, arthritis spurring, and many other conditions dancers may experience. If left untreated, impingement could require surgery to correct. Physical therapy, including stretching and pelvic stabilization exercises, can help improve or prevent hip impingement.
4. Nutrition Deficits
If they aren’t consuming enough calories to fuel their workouts and rehearsal regimens, dancers can experience deficiencies in essential vitamins and nutrients. To prevent weakness and anemia, athletes who are trying to balance a healthy weight with proper nutrition should work with a licensed nutritionist to develop an eating plan.
