If your driving privileges have been suspended or you’ve been convicted of driving under the influence, the court may require you to carry special insurance when you get your license back. SR-22 insurance policies fulfill licensing requirements and allow you back on the road. The guide below explains this coverage in more depth.

What Is SR-22 Insurance?

SR-22s are statements proving that a driver has the minimum amount of car insurance required by the state. Often, this document must be presented formally every month. This kind of insurance provides the same coverage as other policies. However, since it usually follows an accident or conviction, you will likely have to pay more for this coverage.

Who Needs It?

Those convicted of a DUI typically must purchase SR-22 coverage before reinstating their license. This can be true even if you don't own a vehicle. Fortunately, many carriers offer non-owner policies for those who borrow or rent cars.

You may also be ordered to carry this special insurance if you have several convictions for reckless driving on your record but didn't have your license revoked.

How Long Are Drivers Required to Carry SR-22 Insurance in Nebraska?

If the court revoked your license due to a criminal conviction or you accumulated too many points on your license, you'll likely have to carry SR-22 insurance for three years. However, if you lost your driving privileges for causing an accident or failing to pay for damages related to a collision, you only need to submit SR-22 paperwork when your license is restored. If you're required to have an ignition interlock device installed due to a DUI conviction, you'll need to submit SR-22 documentation until your interlock ignition permit expires.
