Whether you're buying your first rifle or have grown up with firearms, everyone can use an occasional refresher on gun safety. From the shooting range to hunting grounds, it's important to handle firearms correctly to avoid any accidents. Here are some of the most basic rules to keep in mind.

How to Handle a Rifle Safely

1. Treat It Like It's Loaded

Even if you think your rifle is unloaded, never do anything with it that you wouldn't do with a loaded gun. Unfortunately, many accidents result from the user mistakingly believing their firearm is empty. Practice safe handling habits and always treat your rifle with the respect of a loaded gun — never like a toy.

2. Point It Away

RiflesNever point your rifle at anything or anyone you don't intend to shoot. Don't aim it at people, even if your finger is off the trigger. When you're not taking aim, point it in the air or down at the ground — never to the side.

3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger

Similarly, you should never have your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot. Even while lining up a shot, keep your finger along the outside of the trigger guard until you're sure you're ready.

4. Store It Correctly

Your rifle should be unloaded any time it's not in use. Store the gun and the ammunition in separate, secure locations, preferably with a combination lock to prevent any accidents.

5. Don't Jostle It

Avoid running, jumping, or climbing with your rifle in hand. The wrong motion can sometimes cause it to fire unexpectedly — not to mention that it's easy to damage the firearm, potentially making it less accurate.
