An overbite occurs when the upper teeth extend forward and overlap the lower set. It becomes a problem when there are more than four millimeters of a difference between the two sets of teeth, as it negatively affects how you eat, speak, and smile. It can also cause pain in your jaw, as well as sleep apnea. Thankfully, because this dental concern is common, orthodontists know how to address it. If you suspect you or your child is experiencing this issue, here's what to know.

What Is an Overbite?

Types

There are two types of overbites. The skeletal kind occurs when the lower jaw is smaller than the upper one, causing the upper teeth to move forward. The other type is a dental overbite, which happens when misalignments between the teeth push the lower jaw backward.

This dental problem can begin at an early age. With toddlers, thumb-sucking and using pacifiers and bottles for too long exacerbate an overbite. Older kids and adults also have habits that increase the risk of an overbite, including teeth grinding, nervously chewing on writing utensils, and biting nails. Genetics and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction contribute to the likelihood of developing an overbite as well.

How Can You Fix It?

The most common way to fix an overbite is by wearing braces. These dental appliances hold elastic bands that consistently apply pressure on the jaw so that it shifts back into place. However, teeth must be straightened before one can use overbite braces. The process is slow, and how long it takes will vary from case to case. Extreme cases can take more than two years to correct.

Many adults and children, however, are self-conscious about using traditional braces. Fortunately, they can still fix their overbites with Invisalign® aligners. These appliances use clear rigid trays that fit outside the teeth instead of braces and elastic. As such, they're nearly unnoticeable, so they don't affect one's appearance. To ensure a safe and gradual change, orthodontists must create multiple trays at different stages of the realignment journey.
