The COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily changed the travel industry. If your upcoming travel plans include staying in a hotel room, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind. They’ll help you, your traveling companions, and other guests stay healthy, allowing everyone to get more out of their much-needed vacations. Use the guide below to prevent the virus’s spread during your travels.

How to Stay in a Hotel During the Pandemic

1. Adhere to CDC Guidelines

Continue following the Center for Disease Control's guidelines regarding the coronavirus. Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds at a time using antibacterial soap, wear a mask in all public spaces, and maintain 6 feet of distance from people you don't know.

Ensure your mask fits comfortably over your nose and mouth, and don't engage with anyone who is sick. Packing a few extra masks and a bottle of hand sanitizer will ensure you're always protected.

2. Review Updated Hotel Rules

Call the hotel to find out what staff requires of guests, such as remaining 6 feet from others in all common spaces, including the front desk area. Follow elevator guidelines, if applicable, such as no more than two to four people in the space at a time, and wear a mask unless you're in your room or actively dining.

3. Avoid Daily Room Cleanings

Make sure the room was thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and ask that it doesn't get cleaned again until you leave. The CDC recommends this practice to reduce viral transmissions since COVID-19 spreads through respiratory droplets. Do your part to maintain a healthy room, such as wiping down doorknobs, countertops, and other frequently used surfaces with disinfecting products.

4. Stay Out of Common Areas

Keep away from common areas as much as possible, including lounge spaces and the fitness center. You might also want to refrain from dining in or indulging in the breakfast buffet if there are a significant number of other guests. Stick to outdoor dining or have takeout sent to the room to limit contact with unknown people.
