A sick tree will typically give off some telltale signs of injury or decay, such as a leaning trunk, dead bark or branches, weak joints, or bacterial or fungal growth. If you see one of these signs, contact a tree care professional to diagnose the cause and remedy the issue before it compromises the tree further. In the meantime, you can take a few steps to help support the tree and its stability.

What to Do If You Have a Sick Tree

1. Be Cautious

Leave the tree as undisturbed as possible before a tree care professional arrives. Prohibit children from climbing on it or playing around it, and prevent pets from going near it. Inspect it for visible wounds, as they could become infected and worsen the structure's condition and shorten its lifespan. Place caution tape around the trunk so family members and pedestrians know to avoid it.

2. Stop Using Chemical Fertilizers & Pesticides

Since you may not be certain what is causing the tree to become sick, temporarily discontinue the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. One of these products may be toxic to the tree, causing its bark to peel or making branches weak.

Stop spreading both liquid and dry synthetic fertilizers and pesticides until a certified arborist has assessed the issue.

3. Keep Watering the Tree

If your region hasn't received much rain lately and your tree is used to regular watering, continue to water it as usual. This will ensure it receives necessary nourishment and nutrients while ailing.

However, be careful not to overwater the base. In general, the bigger the tree, the more water it requires, with the average being about 10 gallons per inch of the tree's diameter. The leaves will begin to wilt if the tree receives too much water, so make sure it's receiving just enough to thrive.
