Invisalign® is a popular orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth with clear trays as an attractive alternative to the more traditional metal brackets and wires. The clear aligner trays are typically worn over the span of 12 months, although additional steps must be taken following the end of treatment. Here the team at Lamont Jacobs Orthodontics in Fairfield, OH, explain everything you need to know about this process.

What Comes After Invisalign® Treatment?

invisalignAlthough you might think your teeth look entirely straight, only your orthodontist can determine when your  Invisalign® treatment is actually complete. Issues you had prior to treatment, such as twisted teeth or misalignment, should be corrected with no crowding or gaps. Unlike traditional braces, completing the treatment only involves removing the tray. However, to prevent your teeth from migrating back to their original position, you will have to wear a retainer. This will allow your jaw time to harden so your teeth will be held in their new position.

You can have a clear retainer, just like the aligner trays, or choose a traditional wire model. Retainers are made from a more durable material for long term use. It is recommended that patients wear their retainer for about 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat and brush. While it depends on the patient’s circumstances, retainers are typically worn for about four to six months following the end of their Invisalign® treatment.
