Brackets are what keep the metal wires of braces attached to your tooth enamel. They can sometimes pop off, requiring an immediate trip to the orthodontist to prevent injuries to the surrounding teeth or gums. While it may feel odd to have one loose bracket even though the rest are firmly attached, this is a very common problem. Here's how to deal with the situation if it occurs.

A Guide to Handling Broken Braces Brackets

Why Do Brackets Fall Off?

People with braces must be careful about what they eat. If you regularly snack on hard candies, nuts, and pretzels or often chew ice, you could damage this dental apparatus. Avoid these types of foods whenever possible until the braces are removed. Be extra cautious when eating them to prevent a broken bracket or wire. Keep inedible items, like pens and pencils, out of your mouth.

Dental hygiene is also an important factor, and certain issues can cause problems with the brackets. Flossing can be more difficult since you have to maneuver strands around the wiring. Be careful when performing this task so you don't accidentally knock a piece loose. If you have a hard time with traditional floss, look for a threader. This thin stick-like tool has a loop on the end to hook floss through. You can slide it between your teeth above the wires of the braces, allowing you to floss more effectively. Avoid brushing too harshly, as well.

If you play sports, protect your teeth with a mouth guard, helmet, or face shield. Running into another player or getting hit in the head with a ball or puck could call for an unexpected trip to the orthodontist.

What Steps Should You Take If a Bracket Is Damaged?

If the bracket is loose but remains in place, leave it alone until your appointment. If it completely fell off, you may need to trim the wires around the area to prevent them from poking you. Have another person cut broken strands with a clean pair of nail clippers and push them towards the teeth. Take some dental wax and apply it to the damaged area to keep the wires in place. Be careful when eating and brushing until you visit the orthodontist.
