If you have an operation that profits from raising or housing animals, your income could be compromised in the event of injuries or death to your livestock. Many farms and ranches have their cows, sheep, pigs, horses, alpacas, and other types of livestock covered under farm insurance. Discover how this type of policy can protect your assets below.

What’s Covered Under Farm Insurance?

Many small to midsize operations use farm policies to insure their livestock. Housing units for the animals and other farm property are protected under this insurance, and the policy will cover either the damages or the physical loss in many disasters.

Livestock can be claimed under farm policies, either individually or as a herd. Theft, fire, and similar problems are typically covered.

For example, injuries sustained during loading or unloading, attacks by wild animals, drownings, and similar accidents may be covered under certain policies.

Should You Consider Additional Coverage?

While general farm insurance covers many circumstances, there are other factors you could face that may warrant additional coverage. Most farm policies only provide limited animal mortality coverage, which typically doesn’t include the death of any livestock caused by disease or age.

A full animal mortality policy, however, will cover sickness. Insurance premiums for these are determined based on the animal’s appraised value or sale price; in some cases, you may be able to get loss of use coverage for the animal. Keep in mind, however, that coverage cannot be secured for animals that have preexisting conditions, and a veterinary exam is required to receive full mortality coverage.
