Skin care isn’t just about luxurious spa treatments; the skin care products you use at home can also have a major impact on the look and health of your skin. No matter our age, this is a serious matter for both men and women since the skin is the body’s largest organ and essential for maintaining our overall wellness. While the exact products you use may vary, here’s a basic overview about how and when to use them.

4 Steps to Care for Your Skin at Home

1. Cleanse

The products you apply will be most effective on a clean face. In the morning, rinse your face with water and wipe it with a soft cloth. Use a mild face soap if your skin feels oily, but don't scrub vigorously as that will strip away the natural oils that moisturize the face.

At night, use an oil-based or micellar cleanser to remove any makeup. You can also use foaming cleansers on makeup-free skin and exfoliators weekly to remove dead skin cells.

2. Tone

Toner removes any last traces of dirt on your face after cleansing. It also balances the pH in your skin, bringing it to the ideal level of 5 to minimize the presence of harmful bacteria. When your skin is at the proper pH, it can better embrace products you’ll use next.

3. Moisturize

Skin can become dry and look flaky or dull, especially in cold dry environments, such as in Alaska, and moisturizer helps retain elasticity. People with oily skin should use a light oil-free moisturizer, while heavier creams can help with dry skin. Cream-based products are also ideal for night usage since there will be ample absorption time before applying makeup or going outside.

4. Add Sunscreen

Apply a high-quality sunscreen over the moisturizer daily to protect your skin. It blocks the UV rays that can cause sun spots and wrinkles and contribute to skin cancer. Apply the sunscreen every 2 hours, even in the clouds and rain.
