When enjoying a day on the water, it’s easy to forget that the sun can cause skin damage. Ultraviolet (UV) rays intensify as they reflect off the water, causing greater harm. Fortunately, you can prevent sunburns and other skin damage while fishing, boating, hiking or swimming by following a few practical skin care tips.

How to Be Water-Wise With Skin Care

1. Always Apply Sunscreen

Even on overcast days, you need protection against the sun. Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30, which only allows about  3% of UV rays to hit your skin. Although there’s no need to choose a product with a higher SPF, you will want to invest in one which is high-quality. For example, you may choose to use a lightweight and non-greasy formula so it won’t clog your pores. A waterproof solution is also essential for spending time on boats or swimming. For the fullest protection, apply sunscreen every two hours.

2. Don’t Forget Your Lips

When protecting against the sun, many people overlook the sensitive skin on the lips. However, don’t use regular sunblock in this area since it could get into your mouth.

Instead, purchase a lip balm that contains sunscreen. Again, you’ll want to find a formula with an SPF of 30. As with your regular sunblock, you should reapply the product consistently.

3. Using an Oral Antioxidant

If you’re looking for added sun protection, consider taking oral antioxidants. These supplements are widely used in dermatology to neutralize excess free radicals and prevent oxidative skin damage that contributes to aging. For anyone who spends considerable time outdoors hiking, fishing, boating, or participating in other activities, antioxidants serve as an extra line of defense that supplements your sunblock. An example is the Heliocare supplement, which is taken while you are outside. With its antioxidant properties, it will help to prevent damage to skin cells from ultraviolet light.
