Farsightedness, otherwise known as hyperopia, prevents people from seeing nearby objects clearly. Since farsightedness is often genetic and present at birth, a child may not realize their blurry vision isn't normal, so they may be less willing to speak up about the issue. If you're not sure if your child needs an eye exam, take a look at some common signs.

How to Tell if a Child Is Farsighted

1. Squinting

Squinting can help bring nearby objects and words into focus. The more severe the level of hyperopia, the more pronounced the squinting may be. Ask your child to read or look at objects close up, and if they have to squint each time to do so, they may need glasses for farsightedness.

2. Rubbing Eyes

Straining your eyes all day can cause them to hurt and burn. When this happens, your child may rub them, trying to relieve the pain. They may do it while they are straining to look at something nearby or throughout the day.

3. Headaches

Working to see better all day can cause the eye muscles to contract more than normal, causing a headache. If your child frequently experiences headaches, your first thought may be allergens or a head injury. However, you should first take them for an eye exam to rule out vision problems.

4. Fatigue

The combination of the previous symptoms can be exhausting to deal with all day. Your child may be tired early every day or just on the days they engage in activities that require them to focus on something nearby. If they’re tired after reading, coloring, or drawing, they may be struggling with farsightedness.

5. Lack of Interest in Reading

Your child may lack interest in anything that requires them to look at nearby objects. If they avoid reading or struggle to learn how, most parents suspect a learning disability. However, the issue could be their eyesight, so schedule an exam in addition to testing for a learning disability.
