Gap teeth are one of the most common cosmetic dentistry issues dentists encounter. These gaps are most noticeable when they occur in the front of the mouth, and can be caused by everything from thumb sucking during childhood to having teeth that are disproportionately small. While many people feel self-conscious about their gap teeth, there are several solutions to address this issue.

3 Cosmetic Dentistry Solutions for Gap Teeth

1. Braces

Braces are designed to fix issues with the mouth’s entire bone shape, which allows them to fix tooth gaps in any part of the mouth. Braces gradually shift all of the teeth into proper positioning, straightening them and filling any gaps that might be present. A full mouth brace is needed for this type of correction because shifting one tooth can create pressure that shifts other nearby teeth.

2. Dental Implants

Dental implants are often used for filling gaps that are as wide as a full tooth. An implant is an artificial replacement tooth that is inserted into the bone or gums. Both fixed and removable implants are available, but since this procedure is only used for extra-large gaps, most patients use other minor corrective options.

3. Dental Veneers

Veneers work similarly to a dental crown, but they are generally used for purely cosmetic issues, while crowns help cover damage from significant tooth decay. A veneer is a shell made of porcelain or ceramic that fits over the existing tooth after some enamel is scraped off and is then bonded to the front of the tooth. Extra-thin veneers are also available that don’t require any enamel removal, making this process less invasive. The veneer is custom-fitted to your mouth, allowing your dentist to essentially “enlarge” teeth to fill in the gap.
