Visiting the dentist can be stressful for many children, but especially for a child with autism.  The presence of strangers, the bright lights, unusual sounds, and occasional pain or discomfort can make the experience overwhelming. Here are some tips for making a visit to the dental office a more positive experience.

Prepping for the Visit

Getting your child with autism ready for a teeth cleaning or other dental work should begin well before the scheduled appointment. Consult a dentist to find out what they do to help children with anxiety and if they have experience working with children on the autism spectrum.

Once you have selected a dentist, mark the appointment on a visual schedule. This will help your child be aware of the appointment days in advance. You can also help your child understand what the experience will be like by printing out a picture book or social story that shows what will happen during their appointment. Help your child practice good dental hygiene at home so they are used to the idea of taking care of their teeth.

What Parents Should Do During the Appointment

Each child with autism has different sensory needs, and parents should prepare accordingly to avoid sensory overload. For example, if your child is bothered by loud noises, they may benefit from wearing noise-canceling headphones or listening to their favorite music to block out dental equipment. Others will benefit from wearing sunglasses to block out bright lights. A comfort object, such as a stuffed animal or family photo, can also provide a calming distraction.

Depending on how your child communicates when in stressful situations, you may need to be present during the procedure to interpret facial expressions and body language. Be sure to communicate such needs to your dentist before your visit.
